What is Bio X4?
Nucific Bio X4 has got to be one of the most talked-about probiotics in the world. It is one of the few probiotics on sale today which claims to offer far more than just a healthier gut microbiome.
According to the Nucific Bio X4 bottle, this probiotic can:
- Manage cravings
- Promote weight management
- Boost metabolism
- Support smoother digestion
Bio X4 is sold primarily as a weight-loss supplement rather than as a probiotic or gut health supplement. A good probiotic can indeed help with weight management, appetite control, and digestion (all of which are interrelated).
The question is, does Bio X4 really work? Can it help with weight management? Is it safe? Is Bio X4 the best gut health supplement on offer right now? Read our full Bio X4 review below and find out.
How do probiotics work?
Before we discuss the particulars of Nucific Bio X4, it’s worth explaining how probiotics are supposed to work.
Probiotics are essentially just bacteria species which are known to affect gut microbiome in a positive way. They might be bacteria found naturally in high concentrations in a healthy human gut, or they might be known to out-compete harmful bacteria species in the gut, depriving them of the food they need to thrive.
In either case, the logic is that probiotics will help re-balance your gut microbiome in favor of healthy gut bacteria.
Most people could benefit from re-balancing their gut microbiome. The average person’s lifestyle today is not conducive to healthy gut bacteria growth: diets low in fiber and high in saturated fat, alcohol abuse, and high-stress working lives all suppress healthy gut bacteria.
So probiotics are designed to turn the tide, restoring a gut microbiome that is full of health-promoting bacteria and low in harmful species.
Nucific Bio X4 Ingredients
Here is the Bio X4 ingredients list as you see it on the bottle:
In case that image fails to load, here is a list of the Bio X4 ingredients with doses:
- Probiotic Blend – 4 Billion CFU
- L. acidophilus
- L. rhamnosus
- L. plantarum
- B. lactis
- B. animalis
- Digestive Enzyme Blend – 43mg
- Weight Management Blend
- Green tea extract – 100mg
- Slimaluma – 166mg
Let’s go through each of these blends in a little more detail to unpack what Bio X4 can and can’t do.
Probiotic Blend – 4 Billion CFU
Bio X4 contains a fairly standard mix of probiotic bacteria species. We get some Lactobacillus strains and some Bifidobacterium strains. These are two of the most abundant bacterial species in the gut, and two of the most important for regulating overall health and digestion. Introducing L. rhamnosus will be particularly beneficial to people who struggle to fully digest lactose.
By introducing a range of these bacteria species, Bio X4 will definitely help rebalance the gut in favor of a more healthful microbiome. It will also promote better digestion of lactose; something most people will benefit from.
Digestive Enzyme Blend – 43mg
The Bio X4 digestive enzyme blend contains amylase, bromelain, and lipase. Amylase is responsible for turning glycogen and starch into simple sugars. Bromelain is an exogenous enzyme found in the pineapple; it breaks down protein extremely efficiently. Lipase catalyzes the hydrolysis of fats; in other words, it helps break down fats into fatty acids.
While these enzymes have been selected to help you digest carbohydrates, fats and protein, we don’t think they are a particularly good choice for Bio X4. Consuming digestive enzymes does not necessarily promote better digestion, and many of these enzymes will become denatured in the stomach. This is one of those things that sounds logical, but in practice it yields little fruit.
Weight Management Blend – 100mg
The Bio X4 weight management blend is just green tea extract. We suspect Nucific have called it a weight management blend to make sure you know why they’ve included green tea!
Green tea is a fantastic substance to use if you’re looking to boost your metabolism and speed up fat loss. A catechin in green tea – EGCG – has been found to directly stimulate lipolysis independently of exercise. That is, EGCG seems to encourage the use of stored fat for energy.
Bio X4 provides 100mg of high-EGCG green tea extract. While a higher dose is probably necessary to see noticeable results, 50mg of EGCG will definitely help accelerate your metabolism and promote fat loss.
Craving Control Blend – 166mg
The Bio X4 craving control blend contains one ingredient; Slimaluma. Slimaluma is a branded form of Caralluma Fimbriata. According to Nucific, this is a powerful appetite suppressant. They claim that Caralluma Fimbriata has been found to be effective at reducing hunger, and by extension, over-eating or snacking.
We have found no evidence to support this claim whatsoever. To date, we haven’t seen one robust, independent clinical trial in which people reported significantly less hunger or reduced food cravings while taking Caralluma Fimbriata. The only studies which we found showing a benefit from Caralluma Fimbriata failed to properly control for confounding factors (source). Until we see some higher quality clinical trials, we’re going to assume this ingredient is bogus.
Our thoughts on the Bio X4 formula
If you’ve read our full review of Nucific Bio X4’s ingredients above, you might think this is a good quality supplement.
But we are not particularly impressed with Bio X4, and we would certainly not recommend it to people looking to improve gut health or to people needing help with weight management.
Our first issue is with the Slimaluma. As far as we can tell, there are no good quality clinical trials proving that Caralluma fimbriata actually helps reduce food cravings. The claims made by Nucific rest on studies which did not control for things like diet and exercise.
The serving of green tea is also decidedly low for a fat loss aid. Most supplements designed to promote fat loss use green tea, but they’ll use up to 300mg of high-EGCG extract. Bio X4 gives us 50mg of EGCG, which isn’t great.
Then there’s the simple fact that digestive enzymes are ineffective when it comes to promoting better digestion. It may sound counter-intuitive, but it’s true; consuming exogenous digestive enzymes doesn’t lead to better digestion, as these enzymes are denatured (rendered useless) by your powerful stomach acid.
So really, we’re left with a very standard collection of probiotic bacteria. These are not bacteria species that you can’t get from common fermented foods like yogurt, sauerkraut, and so on.
All-in-all, Bio X4 is a severely over-priced gut health supplement. You are really paying for a standard, possibly even substandard collection of probiotic bacteria and some green tea extract. For that, the price tag is completely unjustifiable.
If you really want to overhaul your gut microbiome for optimal health and promote digestive health over the long-term, a high-quality prebiotic is a better option anyway. A good prebiotic will selectively promote the growth of healthy bacteria in your gut, which will in turn promote fat loss and better digestion anyway.
Does Bio X4 Promote Weight Loss?
We do not think Bio X4 is a particularly good supplement for people looking to optimize gut health.
But does Bio X4 help you lose weight?
Promoting a healthy gut microbiome is definitely an effective strategy for promoting weight loss. Your gut microbiome has a direct effect on how you handle nutrients, how you store fat, how you control your blood sugar, and your physical performance. Having a balanced, robust gut microbiome puts you in the best place to lose fat.
But consuming probiotic and digestive enzymes are not the most effective way to guarantee good gut health over the long-term. They are not suitable for daily, long-term use, and digestive enzymes don’t make it out of the stomach. A prebiotic is a much more effective, reliable option.
Bio X4 does contain some high-EGCG green tea. Consuming EGCG has been shown in clinical trials to promote fat loss independent of exercise. The dose we get from Bio X4 is not particularly high, but it will still stimulate greater fat loss.
Nucific Bio X4 is not the most effective supplement to take to encourage fat loss. Nor is it the most effective gut health supplement.
But it does represent a safer alternative to cheap diet pills, and it will help you lose weight in the short-term.
Pricing: Is Nucific Bio X4 worth the money?
Is Nucific Bio X4 worth the money?
We don’t think so.
A single bottle will set you back an eye-watering $99.00. Yes, you read that right – $99.00 a bottle.
This is about three times as much as the leading gut health supplement on sale today, and three times as much as the most effective fat burners. So even if you wanted to both promote gut health and encourage fat loss, you’d be better off buying the top-end products in each category.
The fact that Nucific are charging $99.00 for a supplement that is essentially just some standard probiotic bacteria (which you get from fermented foods anyway), some green tea, and an untested appetite suppressant is almost offensive.
Bio X4 Side Effects
Is Bio X4 safe?
On the whole, we think this gut health supplement is safe for the vast majority of users. That is assuming that you are using it for a limited amount of time.
Probiotics are not designed for long-term, daily use; continuing to ingest a cocktail of exogenous gut bacteria every day will eventually cause problems, including:
- Stomach cramps
Probiotics are designed to re-balance your gut bacteria. But continuing to use them for long, unbroken periods will end up tipping the balance the other way.
There is also the issue of Caralluma Fimbriata. This substance has not been thoroughly tested in humans. Clinical trials have thus far not extended beyond 2 month. As such, we cannot say whether or not Bio X4 will cause long-term health risks.
But most users will experience no side effects while using Bio X4. Any side effects that do occur are likely to be mild and transient.
Bio X4 Review Conclusion: Should you buy it?
We don’t see why anybody would opt for Bio X4. At $99.00 per bottle, the price is completely unjustifiable. Instead of buying Bio X4, you could buy the single best prebiotic and the highest-quality fat burner on the market today and still save yourself about $30.
There are serious issues with the Bio X4 formula too. Slimaluma is essentially unproven; the clinical trials showing it to be an effective appetite suppressant were poorly designed and failed to control for confounding factors.
The digestive enzymes will do nothing as they will just be denatured in your stomach.
As such, Bio X4 is essentially a mix of green tea and some basic probiotics. While these ingredients will promote good gut health and fat loss, neither are suitable for long-term use, and neither will make the kind of impact promised by Nucific.
If you want to optimize your gut microbiome, promote fat loss, and enhance overall health, a good quality prebiotic is the best option.
Don’t waste your hard-earned money on over-priced, under-powered supplements like Nucific Bio X4.
